Michael Culhane began flying as a teenager and completed his Private Pilot Licence and Commercial Pilot Licence part time while attending university. After obtaining his first university degree (BSc, University of British Columbia) the author completed his Seaplane Rating, Multi-Engine Rating, Flight Instructor Rating, Instrument Teaching Endorsement, Class 1 Instrument Rating, Senior Commercial Pilot Licence and Airline Transport Pilot Licence and taught ab initio through IFR flight training at Vancouver and Calgary, along with providing aviation ground training programs at Calgary, Vancouver, Edmonton and Toronto. In his flying career, the author has piloted many types of single and multi-engine training aircraft.

While flying professionally the author obtained further university degrees in English Literature (BA, University of British Columbia) and law (JD, University of Calgary). Michael Culhane has provided legal services as a practising lawyer in criminal law, construction law, labour law, aviation law and civil litigation.

In total, the author has written over 30 different aviation training texts that have been used by pilots in all regions of Canada, with over 150,000 copies sold. The author has also completed aviation training texts for USA pilot certificates. Culhane aviation training texts and sample exam guides have been widely adopted throughout all regions of Canada for flight and ground training programs at flying schools, flying clubs and aviation colleges for all Canadian fixed wing and rotary wing licences, ratings and permits, from student pilot permit through airline transport pilot licence.

Currently, the author continues to write and update his training manuals and to provide legal representation to Canadian pilots, aircraft owners and air operators.
