Section 6.28 - Upper Level Charts CMC/WAFC

The following questions should be added to p. 260:

EXERCISE BASED ON CMC 700 - 400 SIG WX:

1. Does this chart represent forecast or actual weather?
2. What approximate flight levels is this chart intended for?
3. What kind of turbulence can be anticipated over western Alberta?
4. What does the hatching over areas of western Alberta warn of?
5. What kind of icing is forecast for the eastern great lakes area?
6. What is the amount and type of cloud cover forecast for mid Quebec?
7. What is the forecast height of the freezing level over Nova Scotia?

ANSWERS:

1. Forecast weather from 06Z - 18Z.
2. From FL 100 - FL 240.
3. Moderate to severe below 12,000 ft.
4. Areas of mountain wave activity.
5. Moderate icing from below the level of the chart (FL 100) to 16,000 ft.
6. 6/8 to 8/8 layers from 10,000 to 24,000 feet with a few Alto Cumulus Castellanus to 20,000 feet.
7. 10,000 feet. See dashed lines.

The following questions should be added to p. 261:

EXERCISE BASED ON RAFC CHART ABOVE:

1. What are the vertical limits for which the chart is provided?
2. What is the height of the tropopause over New Brunswick?
3. What turbulence is forecast over Labrador?
4. What is the jet stream direction, height and speed over northern Newfoundland, and is it strengthening, weakening or remaining constant?
5. What significant weather lies just to the south of Toronto and what are the vertical limits of the significant weather?
6. What is the direction of movement of the cold front at the northern tip of Newfoundland?

ANSWERS:

1. From FL 250 - FL 600.
2. 39,000 feet.
3. Moderate from FL 280 to FL 380.
4. From 270° T at 160 kts, FL 340, weakening (by pair of vertical bars that cross jet stream symbol).
5. Occasional CB embedded in cloud from below FL 250 to FL 360.
6. Southeast (see arrow).
